The oil‑separator element is the core component for oil‑gas separation of screw air compressors. Its main function is to separate lubricating oil from compressed air. If a failed oil‑separator element is not replaced in time, a series of faults will occur, such as sharply increased oil consumption, excessive oil carry‑over at air outlet and high‑pressure loss. In severe cases, the air storage tank, pipelines, dryers and precision filters on the downstream side will be contaminated. Instead of only relying on maintenance hours, you should make a comprehensive judgment combined with pressure differential, operating conditions and abnormal phenomena.
1. Judgment by Pressure Differential Data (The Most Scientific Standard)
Normal pressure differential of new element: generally 0.02‑0.03MPa
Warning value: When the pressure differential reaches **0.05MPa**, keep close observation and prepare spare parts in advance
Replacement threshold: Replace immediately once pressure differential ≥ **0.08~0.10MPa**
Note: Some models display oil‑separator pressure differential directly on the control panel. For units without sensors, calculate manually by measuring the inlet and outlet pressure of the oil separator. Excessively high differential pressure means the element is clogged, which will lead to higher unit load, increased power consumption and high‑temperature alarm.
2. Judgment from Appearance, Oil Leakage and Oil Consumption
Significantly higher oil consumption: The frequency of oil refilling rises sharply under the same working condition with no external oil leakage points, which most probably indicates damage and separation failure of the oil separator element.
Oil carry‑over at air outlet and oil contamination on downstream equipment: A large amount of oil can be drained from the bottom of the air tank, the dryer filter element is polluted by oil, and oil exists in the gas pipeline. The inner glass‑fiber layer of the oil‑separator element is broken or punctured, causing direct oil escape.
Oil seepage at the housing or flange of oil separator: The sealing ring is aged or the element bulges and deforms. Replace it even if the differential pressure is still acceptable.
3. Service Hour Reference Based on Operating Conditions
Standard working condition: In a clean and well‑ventilated environment with genuine compressor oil and regular three‑filter maintenance, the normal service life of an oil‑separator element is 2000‑4000 working hours.
Harsh working condition: Heavy dust, high temperature & humidity, non‑standard lubricant and frequent start‑stop cycles will shorten its service life to 1000‑2000 hours.
⚠️ Working hours are only for reference. **Differential pressure shall be the primary judgment basis**. In poor environments, the element may be clogged or punctured long before reaching the rated service hours.
4. Other Indirect Fault Signs
- Slow pressure build‑up after eliminating intake valve fault and system leakage, check for clogged oil separator
- The unit is prone to overheating while the cooling system works normally; high oil‑separator differential pressure increases internal circulation resistance
- Oil emulsification caused by water ingress damages the element. Mandatory replacement is required even with short running hours.
Summary
Priority of judgment criteria for oil‑separator replacement: **Differential pressure first, oil consumption & air‑outlet oil carry‑over second, running hours third**. Stop the machine for replacement once differential pressure hits the limit. For compressors without differential‑pressure monitoring, inspect the oil‑separator element immediately if unexplained high oil consumption or outlet oil contamination appears, to prevent secondary damages from prolonged faulty operation.
