How to Prevent Air‑Compressor Overheat Shutdown

Overheat shutdown is one of the most common on‑site failures of air compressors. It not only cuts off air supply immediately, but frequent overheating also accelerates oil deterioration, screw‑element wear and seal damage, shortening the overall service life of the unit. To fundamentally reduce high‑temperature tripping, management should be carried out in five aspects: heat dissipation system, lubricating oil, air intake environment, operating conditions and routine maintenance.
1. Keep the Heat Dissipation System Unobstructed
Poor heat dissipation is the primary cause of overheating. For air‑cooled units, regularly blow and clean the oil cooler, as dust, oil stains and flocculent debris will block cooling fins and reduce heat exchange efficiency. Repair the cooling fan in time if it runs at low speed, breaks down or suffers belt slippage. For water‑cooled air compressors, ensure cooling water pressure and flow meet requirements, remove limescale inside pipelines and clear blockages, and keep cooling‑water temperature within a normal range. Besides, guarantee good ventilation of the compressor room. A confined space with hot air recirculation will trigger overheating even if the cooling system works well.
2. Control Lubricant Quality and Oil Level Strictly
Compressor oil undertakes both cooling and lubrication tasks. An excessively low oil level reduces circulating oil volume and heat‑carrying capacity, which easily causes overheating. An overly high oil level aggravates internal churning heat and also pushes up temperature. Use only special compressor oil of the model specified by the manufacturer and avoid mixing different brands of oil. Replace oil strictly according to maintenance cycles once it becomes deteriorated, thinned, emulsified or contaminated, since degraded oil loses most of its cooling performance. In addition, a clogged oil filter restricts oil supply and leads to oil shortage for the air‑end, resulting in rapid temperature rise in a short time.
3. Maintain Three Core Filters to Reduce Unit Load
A blocked air filter increases intake resistance and compression load, making the air‑end run hotter. A clogged oil separator raises internal differential pressure and backpressure of the unit, increasing power consumption and operating temperature. Replace the air filter, oil filter and oil separator on schedule instead of running with dirty filters for an extended period. Control intake temperature as well; prevent the compressor from direct sunlight or sucking in hot recirculated air.
4. Optimize Equipment Operating Conditions
Avoid long‑term overpressure operation. If the set discharge pressure exceeds the rated value, the air‑end load and heat generation will rise sharply. Prevent continuous full‑load non‑stop operation; run two compressors alternately if possible. Check the thermostatic valve regularly. A stuck thermostatic valve fails to divert oil to the cooler, which will send oil temperature soaring, a hidden fault that even new machines may encounter. Also inspect the oil stop valve to guarantee stable oil supply.
5. Implement Regular Inspection and Maintenance
Monitor discharge temperature and oil temperature parameters during routine patrols. Troubleshoot abnormal high temperature in advance instead of waiting for emergency shutdown. Periodically clean pipeline scale and check the working status of cooling components, fans and valves. Build maintenance records, and include radiator cleaning, oil inspection and filter condition check in daily patrol items.
