Replacement Cycle of Air Compressor Lubricating Oil

Replacement Cycle of Air Compressor Lubricating Oil

The replacement cycle of air compressor lubricating oil is not fixed. It is mainly determined by equipment model, oil type and operating conditions, following the principle of whichever comes first: operating hours or calendar time. Replacement shall be advanced under harsh working conditions, oil deterioration or abnormal operation, so as to avoid overheating, carbon deposition, main rotor wear and rotor seizure faults.

1. Standard Replacement Cycle for Various Air Compressors (Normal Clean Working Conditions)

1. Screw Air Compressor (Industrial Mainstream Model)

New machine running-in period: Lubricating oil and oil filter must be replaced after the first 500 hours of operation to remove factory impurities and protect the main unit.
Standard replacement cycle:
  • Mineral lubricating oil: 2000~3000 hours / 6 months
  • Semi-synthetic lubricating oil: 4000~6000 hours / 12 months
  • Fully synthetic lubricating oil: 6000~10000 hours / 24 months

2. Piston Air Compressor

Normal working condition: 500~1000 hours / 3 months

3. Centrifugal Air Compressor

Special turbine oil: 8000~12000 hours (subject to the manufacturer’s standard)

2. Working Condition Adjustment & Emergency Replacement Standard

1. Harsh Working Conditions (Cycle shortened by 30%~50%)

High temperature in the machine room, heavy dust, humid and rainy environment, 24-hour full-load operation, and long-term low-load operation will all accelerate lubricating oil aging, and the replacement cycle shall be shortened accordingly.

2. Immediate Replacement Without Waiting for Scheduled Cycle

Replace the oil immediately if any of the following occurs:
The oil turns dark or charred with peculiar smell, becomes whitish and emulsified, generates excessive foam, or contains metal impurities; the unit trips frequently due to overheating, oil consumption rises abnormally, or oil content in compressed air exceeds the standard.

3. Mandatory Oil Replacement for Special Scenarios

Replace with brand-new lubricating oil directly in the following cases:
Restarting the equipment after being idle for more than half a year; previous operation under oil shortage or overheating; mixed use of different brands of lubricating oil.

Summary

Air compressor oil replacement shall be based on oil type, adjusted according to working conditions, and focused on oil quality.
Follow the specified operating hours and time limit (whichever comes first) for conventional units; advance the cycle in harsh environments, and replace immediately when oil deteriorates or equipment runs abnormally. Meanwhile, replace the oil filter and air filter together, which can effectively prevent equipment faults and prolong the service life of the air compressor main unit.
