Working Principle of the Air Compressor Air Receiver

Overview

The air receiver is a sealed pressure vessel installed between the air compressor outlet and post-processing equipment. Based on four physical principles: volume expansion to reduce flow velocity, gravity sedimentation, gas compression characteristics and sealed pressure storage, it realizes pressure stabilization & buffering, separation of water and impurities, air reserve and pulsation damping, serving as an indispensable component of the compressed air system.

1. Principle of Volume Expansion and Flow Deceleration (Fundamental Principle)

The compressed air discharged from the compressor head flows at high speed. After entering the large cavity of the air receiver, the flow space expands sharply, which greatly slows down the airflow. Turbulent high-speed air turns into steady low-speed airflow, creating conditions for subsequent cooling and water sedimentation, and eliminating the pulsed exhaust from the compressor.

2. Principle of Pressure Storage & Pressure Stabilization

  1. The sealed tank stores high-pressure compressed air continuously, complying with Boyle’s Law of gases: in a confined space, pressure rises as gas volume increases. Excess air produced by the compressor is stored inside the tank when air demand is low. During peak air consumption, the reserved high-pressure air supplements the pipeline automatically to stabilize system pressure.
  2. The tank volume extends the pressure fluctuation cycle, preventing frequent loading and unloading of the compressor caused by minor air usage changes.

3. Natural Cooling & Gravity Sedimentation for Oil-Water Separation

  1. Hot compressed air dissipates heat naturally through the tank wall after entering the receiver. As temperature drops, the saturated water capacity of air decreases, and water vapor condenses into liquid water.
  2. With reduced flow speed, liquid oil droplets, rust and dust sink to the tank bottom under gravity. Regular drainage via automatic or manual drain valves achieves primary purification, easing the working load of refrigerated dryers and precision filters.

4. Principle of Pulsation and Vibration Absorption

Air discharged by screw and piston compressors is intermittent pulsed airflow with vibration. The large-capacity receiver acts as a buffer chamber to absorb airflow pulsation and pressure oscillation, weaken pipeline resonance, reduce impact on valves, pipe joints and instruments, and lower air leakage and component wear.

5. Principle of Pressure Bearing & Safety Pressure Relief

As special pressure equipment, the receiver is equipped with pressure gauges and safety valves with rated safe working pressure. If pressure rises abnormally due to control failure, the safety valve opens automatically to release excess pressure, protecting the main unit, pipelines and pneumatic components from damage caused by overpressure.

Summary

The working mechanism of the air receiver follows clear physical logic: slow airflow via enlarged volume, stabilize pressure through sealed gas storage, separate water and oil by cooling and gravity, absorb airflow vibration with the tank cavity, and guarantee safety through pressure relief accessories. With a simple structure, it comprehensively improves air quality and the operational stability of the entire air system.
